Because of the quality of the songs and the script, Mame is somewhat enjoyable, despite the casting. Lucille Ball in the title role and Bea Arthur as Vera Charles were both too old for their roles. It is hard to imagine Lucille Ball ever being convincing as a socialite sophisticate. The rest of the cast makes little impression, unlike the situation in the non-musical movie Auntie Mame where many of the players gave memorable performances. DVD
